Fundamental data – balance sheet and income statement

What Is Fundamental Data?

Fundamental data refers to economic metrics of a company that come from the official annual financial statements. They form the basis of every fundamental analysis. The three central components are:

  • Balance sheet: Snapshot of assets, liabilities and equity
  • Income statement: Revenue, costs, result
  • Cashflow statement: Actual payment flows

The Balance Sheet

The balance sheet shows, as of a specific date, what a company owns (assets) and how it is financed (liabilities). Important items for stock analysis:

Key Balance Sheet Metrics
EquityBasis for equity ratio and P/B ratio
Equity Ratio (EKQ)Equity / total capital
Book value per shareEquity / number of shares
Long-term liabilitiesDebt ratio

The Income Statement

The income statement shows the process of generating results: from revenue through various cost items to the annual result.

Key Income Statement Metrics
RevenueBasis for P/S ratio
EBITEarnings before interest and taxes
Net income / EPSBasis for P/E ratio
Dividend per shareBasis for dividend yield

The Cashflow Statement

Cashflow shows where money comes from and what it's used for. Unlike the income statement, cashflow cannot be distorted through accounting structuring and is therefore considered a particularly reliable data basis.

Types of Cashflow
Operating cashflowFrom ongoing business operations
Investing cashflowPurchases/sales of fixed assets (CapEx)
Free cashflowOperating CF minus CapEx

Reporting Standards

Fundamental data is prepared according to different accounting standards: IFRS (international, Europe), US-GAAP (USA), or HGB (Germany). In the USA, data is prepared according to US-GAAP, in all other countries according to IFRS. Finanzoo processes data from both standards and presents it in a comparable way.
